All you have to do is hear the first few bars of 'Heart', with its Bjork-influenced horse-clop beat and radiating bass line (sounding slightly like 'Earth Intruders'), to know that Bertie Blackman is travelling down different musical paths this time around. Gone is the bleak and black riot-grrl rock of, er, Black; instead we've got jagged electronic beats melded with scything jazz chords and doo-wop vocals. What a cocktail!

I spoke to Bertie a couple of years ago just after the release of Black in 2006. She was moving house, and in her mind she was moving musical ideas too. I remember her saying she wanted to move in a more electronic direction, kind of like what Radiohead did circa Kid A / Amnesiac.
So do you reckon she's achieved it? 'Heart' is just one of the songs that'll appear on her album Secrets and Lies which will be out in May.
