Following Stephan Groth and APOPTYGMA BERZERK since their initiation in the early 90s with his first releases I stopped when he commercially successful changed over to the Future Pop genre, which I really hate and so I lost track of the Norwegian cats. Now, I surprisingly got hold of the promo CD to the band’s sixth record Rocket Science and was downright curious how APOPTYGMA BERZERK will sound in 2009, as there was said that the guys do it heavier and harsher again. And Rocket Science enchanted me right from the first track on in a very nostalgic way. No, the guys became any bit harsher or heavier. Rocket Science is a pure reminiscence, is a pure homage to the Disco era in the late 70s/early 80s, morphed and transformed, jazzed up to higher level of performance blasting into the new millennium. Rocket Science is spacy yet space-like, much danceable, flimsy touched by a David Bowie style and much entertaining. Compositions and structures are typical for APOPTYGMA BERZERK, but melodies often remind of very old classic from the Disco genre (just lean back and listen to Amanda Lear’s Follow Me, also Q Lazzarus with Goodbye Horses pops up in my mind). Rocket Science gathers momentum and variety with crispy, Stoner-like guitar work and various synth sounds as in Green Queen or Pitch Black/Heat Death for example, but always keeping up that Disco flair with its mesmerizing melodies and sing-along refrains. Can you see the splinters of light around you?Rocket Science is an album for those who want to step aside from the daily life for a moment (approx 50 minutes ;)) and enjoy the feeling of times long gone ;)I just wonder how the Electro community will receive this shining gem of entertaining retrospective. I think they will hate it ;)
